Lucky charm? Beckham dressed as a mascot for England football match (but they still didn’t win)

The Polish football authorities disappointed thousands of England supporters when they were forced to reschedule their match in Warsaw on Tuesday night because of a waterlogged pitch. But one Brit was overjoyed. David Beckham jetted over from LA overnight to attend the match yesterday at 4pm… only you might not have noticed him on the pitch or in the crowd.

Looking dejected: David Beckham realises Hodgson wants him to be a mascot rather than a team player

The former England captain was overjoyed when Roy Hodgson rang and asked him to get on the next flight to Warsaw. However he forgot to ask which position he would be playing in.

When he arrived at the stadium, Becks couldn’t find his trademark number seven football shirt. A lion mascot costume was hanging in its place instead.

Taking a beating: The England players taunted Becks about being a mascot rather than playing on the pitch

It turns out that the 16 year old work experience guy who had been paid to be England’s mascot on Tuesday night had to head back to school in the UK on Wednesday – hence the urgent call to Beckham in LA.

The ever-positive footballer took it all in good spirits though. He immediately suited up – and checked that his hair looked OK before putting on the lion’s head.

… but Becks got his own back. The England team took a bit of a beating on the pitch as they drew against Poland

The rest of the team, of course, gave Becks a beating in the dressing room… before taking a bit of a beating themselves on the pitch. Rooney scored a goal in the first half, but Kamil Glik equalised half-an-hour later.

A draw against Poland isn’t exactly something to be proud of – maybe the team needs a better mascot.
