Madonna and child: Like A Virgin singer comes over all religious for Christmas

Madonna has tended to keep her Christmas celebrations pretty religion-free. The only festive single she has ever released was Santa Baby, way back in 1987. However, 25 years is a long time – particularly in the music business – and Madonna has been through at least a dozen reincarnations since then. Her latest guise, is as a nativity coordinator.

New photos, released by Madonna’s aides today, show the singer and her eldest daughter Lourdes at their most devout. And considering Madonna has been using the religious moniker since she started her career in 1979, it’s about time.

Perhaps spurred on by yesterday’s story about the Beckhams, Madonna and Lourdes also chose to recreate the nativity. However, the Like A Virgin singer thrust her daughter into the spotlight as the Virgin Mary rather than taking on the role herself.

Lourdes, who is still a rather diminutive 16 year old, looks particularly demure in the shoot. She is usually known for her grungy outfits. Her mother also looks very smart in a floor-length, velvet, halter-neck gown.

We’re surprised Madonna’s other children Rocco, David and Mercy weren’t also coaxed into taking part in the shoot. Perhaps Madonna wanted to focus her attention on her first born, maybe the others were in the UK with their Dad Guy Richie, or maybe they just realised the whole shoot was a little bit naff?
